The full title of this piece is “Fake Bands that should be Real Bands: Teutonic Deathsquad”.  It’s the first in a series (hopefully!) of fake concert posters for made-up bands.  Each poster will reflect the genre of the bands (and the style of posters that often goes with those genres).

For what it’s worth, Teutonic Deathsquad is a Crusade-death-metal band from Manchester.  They are Christian, but (as their sub-sub-genre suggests), they hold a rather antiquated view of the religion.  No black metal kids would dare to burn down the Deathsquad’s church - they’d wind up with a sword in their guts.  Despite views that differ from most of the metal scene, Teutonic Deathsquad is well-respected in the underground.

Zygote Humanity play a kind of sludgy grindcore, focusing on existentialist themes.  Their music evokes the sheer terror of being alive.

Lucifer’s Hooked Sceptre (three guesses as to what “hooked sceptre” is a euphemism for) are still finding their niche, and have only recently started touring.  They are a fairly run-of-the-mill gory death metal band (with aspirations of one day warranting the label “technical”) but they are young and dedicated, with growing potential.

Bruce Sterling has said “cars are the new cigarettes” on his blog a few times (though I’m sure he wasn’t the originator of the phrase) and I liked it so much that I decided to make a poster out of it.  I’m not happy with the type, but I don’t have many fonts on my computer and, more importantly, I am bad at typography.  I am reading my Bringhurst, though.

What I like about this poster is that it’s subtle.

Once again escaping representation.  I’m doing more art lately, but I really can’t commit myself to a specific style (although, in broad strokes, this is very much the same kind of thing I’ve been doing for a couple years now).  I can’t really afford to quit doing representational stuff, though, especially since I’m trying to boost my craft.  This was a birthday present for Erica!

This piece is a bit of a departure from my last few paintings; I’m experimenting a little.  Pushing further from representation again, while not abandoning it completely (yet).  It was a birthday present for Holly.

This was a birthday present for my friend Jesse, who is, among other things, a gifted musician.  He composed the music that eventually filled my grad film.  I’m not sure how many more pieces I am going to do in this combined “pretentious colour field painting/ink drawing” style.  I really like doing them, but I feel like I’m ready to try some new things.

When I make art that will be a gift (especially if it is a blind Secret Santa style present, as this was) I let the frame help dictate the content.  Hence, my first diptych!  I am proud to say that this piece was “stolen” by my friend Daniel, who in his turn ignited a series of present-thefts that will be Remembered through the Ages.

I should say that this image is actually a composite of the piece scanned outside the frame, and the frame itself, as the scan of the image in the frame lost a lot of detail.

‘Tis the season for gift-art.  This was a birthday present for my friend Katie, who is a superhero and a cyclist rolled into one.  I’m not sure whether the idea for THE ROCK ULTIMATE came before or after this one, but I think of them as loosely related, for what I hope are obvious reasons.

It was originally going to be a dude playing the guitar, but I decided that since women can rock out too, it would be cooler if it was a lady.  She’s having a blast: look at that grin!

This piece was made for a secret santa event - it seems like the only thing that can get me to finish one-off art pieces is gift-giving occasions.  Maybe I will write about that, some time.

Digital Photo Collage

Project #5 for the Shy Artist Society - it’s a collage from photos of my neighbourhood.  Every image was taken with my phone, but was not resized or duplicated in any way.  Each piece was only used once, and is in its original resolution.

This was another project for the Shy Artist Society - this time it was a recipe share.  Since the only kind of food I ever make on a regular basis is the easy kind, I chose chili.  I designed this recipe as a one-page mini-comic, except my conversational writing took up far more space than I had planned - so there aren’t many pictures.  You can get a full-sized printable version of the comic here.  Instructions for folding and cutting it can be found here.
