SUPERSATURATED

December 29th, 2008

Art-speaky synopsis: SUPERSATURATED is a critical musing which examines the pervasive ubiquity of advertising and its tendency to dominate language and influence behaviour.

I finished this film in June of 2006, it was my graduation project at the Emily Carr Institute (now University) in Vancouver. I could write an essay (and have) about all the research and levels of meaning involved, but I think it’s better that viewers take whatever they take from it, without me telling them what they’re supposed to take.

Two major influences: Koyaanisqatsi, and Mind Game.  If you haven’t seen those films, do your best to find them and watch them.  They are fantastic.

Ink and Watercolour on Paper

This shattered landscape is (very) loosely based on Vancouver.  It’s drawn from my brain, so the geography is funky.  The tallest building is the Shangri-La, the second tallest is the Wall Centre.  I guess.  This was a gift for Winston.

Say what you will about hipsters, they are fun to draw.  The title is derived from the four colour printing method: Cyan Magenta Yellow Black (or “CMYK”).  This was made as a Secret Santa gift.

Painted for Project 2 at the Shy Artist Society.  It is a portrait of my Mum.  Sometimes abstraction says more than representation.  It is also my triumphant return to Pretentious Colour Field Painting.
